“Boy, what a sound! How I love to hear that money clink! That beautiful sound of cold, hard cash!”
Lucy in A Charlie Brown Christmas
Thanks to my friends at First Financial Credit Union in Albuquerque for this frank and practical look at giving kids cash for Christmas…
There are many who think giving cash is cold and impersonal but you may be giving a child more than you think when you put cash in an envelope and put it in their stocking.
Giving cash allows a child to make financial decisions. It may not be a wise one eg purchasing plastic junk, or maybe they are responsible and put part of it away for college or saving up for their first car. But wise or not, they are learning a lesson about managing their own money that will last them all their lives.
Shopping is as easy as stopping at your credit union’s ATM. And since there is no packaging and wrapping around your gift other than a envelope it’s an environmentally friendly option too.
Merry Christmas from Kirby and his mates at the Credit Union Association of New Mexico!
